OLIVER HUNTEMANN 3hrs (Ideal Recordings, Bremen)

Myths abound in the north when it comes to techno ground zero, and they refuse to go away. Oliver Huntemann is one of a handful of children of the north who, for what seems like an eternity, add an element of credence to the mythology. He does not, of course, live in a snowy forest or at the edge of the polar oceans. The sun does, on occasion, shine down on Hamburg. Nevertheless, there is a tendency towards hypothermic reduction in the rigourous efficiency of the Huntemann oeuvre.

Huntemann’s tracks may well have dragged themselves out of the same primeval soup, but it was the far north which fired them with the necessary steel for clubland. The resulting creations are linear, free of fancy, charmingly direct.

Oliver Huntemann’s concrete roots can be traced back to early techno. Had he been any younger, he would undoubtedly have sucked electronica like mother’s milk from a C64 chip. Like so many of his colleagues, his route to techno took a tour through electro and rave. As well as numerous 12 inches and almost as many remixes (for Underworld, Chemical Brothers and Depeche Mode, to name just a few), he released his second album, “Fieber“ in 2006. Last but not least the successful collaboration with Dubfire (Deep Dish) in 2008, creating with Diablo and Dios the biggest dance tracks of the year.

With so much fame on his plate, he done remarkably well to stay out of the spotlight. That’s how it is in the north, actions count, not appearances.

PHIL KIERAN Live (Cocoon, Belfast)

Phil Kieran has been in the upper echelons of the electronic music game for more than a decade, but is only now releasing his debut album under his own name.

Known for rocking clubs and releasing a string of killer twelves, Belfast-based Phil has hooked up with German powerhouse Cocoon in recent times. Sven Väth’s label is now about to release Shh, a groundbreaking piece of work that will undoubtedly gain Phil plaudits across the board.

Phil has synthesized his myriad of influences into one radically beautiful whole: An album far greater than the sum of its parts. It’s very much a home or car listening album, perfect for post-club play, although plenty of the individual tracks contain discerning dancefloor dynamics too.

But now Phil has just entered the next phase in his career. Shh won’t be a secret for long: it’s almost certain to take its place amongst not only the albums of the year, but as one of the landmark releases of the last two decades.

DANIEL STEINBERG (aka HARRY AXT) (Front Room Recordings / Grand Petrol).

We were a bit reluctant to write a biography for Daniel Steinberg. His releases over the past few years on Micro.fon, Grand Petrol and Stylerockets brought him international success, his phenomenal attitude towards music and the people who live for it makes him a darling of the club scene, and it is pretty certain that the future brings him well-deserved accolades, if not knighthood. Both critics and those just out to dance and hear amazing music are in love with the development of his sound. Those who want more can look forward to Daniel’s new releases in the coming months and more remixes for the insatiable beat masters at Stylerockets.

Its very likely you have gone crazy and danced like a nut to Pay For Me, I Like To Be, Viva La Fiwa or more recently Preacherman & Bailando. His DJ sets are a mixed bag, delivered with the skill and style of someone who’s been doing it and doing it well for years.

It’s nearly impossible to capture the calibre and character of Daniel Steinberg in only two paragraphs, but we’ll let the music finish his story.

OLIVER KOLETZKI (Stil Vor Talent, Berlin ).

It sounds like a fairy tale. In 2005 29-year old OLIVER KOLETZKI presses 500 copies of his underground hit “Der Muckenschwarm”.One of those white labels lands in Sven Väth’s record bag and whenever he plays the track, the people go wild. Shortly after techno king Väth signs the track on his techno empire Cocoon. “Der Muckenschwarm”, already considered as a techno classic - becomes the best sold techno record of 2005, and OLIVER KOLETZKI gets voted best newcomer of the year in prestigious Groove magazine.

In October 2005, while still riding on the success of his debut single, Oliver directly realises one of his dreams: to have his own label. He founds Stil vor Talent, a label dedicated to pushing new artists and creating a platform for a huge variation of quality electronic dance music – from minimal techno to squeaky house to pop music.

Label manager, producer, DJ, bandleader: above all this, Oliver still manages to fill the clubs around the world and make people smile to his energetic DJ sets. Be in the best clubs of Europe such as London’s Fabric, Berlin’s Berghain or around the rest of the world: Oliver
knows how to perform and connect with his audience. OLIVER KOLETZKI is already working on his next album. There is really no stopping him in 2010!

SETH TROXLER (Wagon Repair, Spectral Sound, Detriot).

Through a leaking bodily cavity resembling the pork found in Chinese restaurants, Satan shat out a crystal beaming with glowing red embers. This crystal matured into the fetus of Seth Troxler. Seth was placed on earth as a weeping fetus, the sound of inevitability. As he grew, his ancestral roots took on a magnetic channeling power, more than his feeble mind could ever consciously fathom. As a result, he became capable of creating some of the world’s finest and most intuitive dance cuts.

With his early Detroit experiences Seth gained a preternatural understanding of rave, and dance music history, that now allows him to conjours up mixes and tracks like Botticelli conjoured his Venus.

The Berlin resident defines the hedonistic nature of the city, reveling in the afterparty lifestyle and launching legions of “Did you hear what Seth did/said/played?” stories. It seems like the word is out about the American jock: Troxler’s DJing style more often than not reflects his personality. Ebullient, fun, sexy. And a tiny bit out of control. Which, when you think about it, makes for some of the most memorable sets of all.

FORMAT: B Live (High Grade / Stil Vor Talent) - Berlin

Who’s up for a live set from a brilliant German techno duo with a deep passion of Pet Shop Boys, Michael Jackson and Detroit techno. Format: B have been developing their craft in the back streets & techno clubs of Berlin and Erfurt since the early 1990s. Biding their time and accumulating the knowledge in becoming true aural innovators.

Format: B have created a new wave of techno. Gone are the clichés of old and in with the new rifts and melodies to appeal to the techno kids of now. At the forefront of new school of German techno, their distinctive style has been grooving away dance floors for years.

Their first visit to Australia is going to be memorable. Strap in, suit up, plug in, turn on and join us for the ride.

NATHAN FAKE Live (Border Community) - London

At the tender age 23 years, this electronica music prodige hails from that most unlikely hotbed of new musical talent, the deepest, darkest farmer country of Norfolk, UK. Exploding onto the electronic scene with one of the most astounding debut singles ever ‘Outhouse, his rocktronica follow ups The Sky was Pink, Dinamo and his debut album Drowning in a sea of Love cemented his status as a true musical genius!

Hard Island Hard Islands’ – the latest album from blissed-out-electronica talent Nathan Fake – is a techno record. More importantly though, it’s the right kind of techno. It far succeeds numerous lesser, generic efforts thanks to Fake’s varied musical palette and willingness to guide things into other, more experimental territories at any time.

Nathan has recently unveiled his laptop live set, to rave reviews. Reading like a checklist of the world’s capitals of cool, dates in Berlin, Barcelona, Madrid and Amsterdam form the next stages in the Nathan Fake campaign to take live dance music to levels unattained.

ALEX SMOKE Live (Soma Records) - Scotland

Alex Smoke is a Scottish talent making electronic records that blur together European minimalism, pop structures and emotional strings and pads. He has released two full length albums, ‘Incommunicado’ and ‘Paradolia’ [Soma Records] and a slew of singles and remixes

His debut release ‘Random As’ came out in January 2002, but Smoke has always been immersed in music with classical training in cello and piano.

Smoke’s own productions are often described as moody, a reputation he doesn’t shy away from. His debut on Soma was the euphoric ‘Chica Wappa’, described by Smoke as “undoubtedly the most optimistic track I’ll ever write. My music will never be this upbeat again.”

Smoke performs live and DJs, and his agenda as a spinner is perhaps well represented by ‘Sci-Fi-Hi-Fi Vol. 3’ from 2006. His debut DJ mix combined a fascination with dub techno, classic Detroit and new European minimal techno. His Live shows are awe-inspiring epic techno sagas. Smoke is going to tear a part The Likes Of You.

ARNAUD LE TEXIER (Safari Electronique) - France

Arnaud Le Texier started his career in 1990. His music can be best described as a call for everyone to get on the dance floor. His productions and DJ sets is blend of deep house and techno with a touch of minimal.

In 1990 Arnaud Le Texier started his DJ. Inspired by the work of artists such as Herbie Hancock, The Orb, Kraftwerk and Pink Floyd, Arnaud began playing at rave parties alongside various established DJ’s and later launched the weekly club party “Promised Land”

At the end of 2004 Arnaud launched Safari Electronique, which concentrates on more experimental and minimal sounds with a vision of mixed experimentation, sensuality and dance-floor grooves. Receiving international recognition for the high quality and diversity of its output such as : Arnaud Le Texier, D’Julz, Italoboyz, Damian Schwarz, Luca Bacchetti, Ekkohaus and Johnny D.

Arnaud is a perfect blend of natural talent and raw flare with very distinctive music.

The Grandson Of Detroit Techno Omar S is a highly respected producer of underground house and techno from Detroit. He runs sought after blueprint Detroit label FXHE records, engineers for other producers including Theo Parrish plus tours the globe delivering techno and house to the masses.

Omar S trademark is giving the crowd a rare slice of unreleased Detroit gold. When it comes to delivering Detroit to the dance floor he is the same class as Carl Craig, Derrick May and Theo Parrish. His motto “he is putting a new wave of real Detroit techno soul back on the map”. Given the almost hysterical rave reviews of his releases and recent Fabric CD, it seems a pretty fair assessment.

Canada’s Mathew Jonson has become one of the preeminent producers and DJ’s in electronic music today. A musical prodigy since a young age, Mathew’s childhood included forays into classical piano, drums, and percussion, in which he played in the under 18 concert band at age 11.

Recording on internationally renowned labels such as Sub Static, Minus, Perlon, Kompakt, Itiswhatitis, Arbutus, and now on his newly formed label Wagon Repair, Jonson has created some of the most influential tracks of the past few years. Tracks such as ‘Decompression’, ‘Alpine Rocket’ w/ Luciano, ‘Marionette’, ‘Folding Space, ‘Typerope’, and ‘Return of the Zombie.

Mathew’s music is a hybrid of styles; forging influences from techno, jazz, house, drum ‘n’ bass and fusion to create flowing bass lines and synth melodies that have influenced his trademark tech-fusion sound.

What has often set Mathew apart from other performers is his ability to improvise and perform with other players in a live group setting. This has resulted in musical formations such as the Modern Deep Left Quartet and Cobblestone Jazz, who have developed an international reputation for their intensely soulful and masterful composition that translates both in recording sessions and in live performance. Mathew has also collaborated with artists such as Luciano, Hrdvsion and the Mole, continually looking at new approaches to electronic music.

But as such accolades continue to roll in, Mathew’s modesty continues to speak through the meditative sounds created in his studio, a testament both to his musicianship and his authentic nature.
