The Likes Of You 3rd birthday with Josh Wink, Theo Parrish, Christian Burkhardt Live, Danny Howells & Claude Vonstroke….

Once in a while a club or event creates something special and extraordinary. The music, the people, the atmosphere, everything is so perfect to produce a beautiful, life changing moment. And then there is The Likes Of You. Created by two guys who shared their love of parties and techno, its now considered at the forefront of electronic music throughout Australia. Thanks to the support of thousands of similar souls over the last 3 years, The Likes Of You is the eye fillet of the techno world. In 2010, The Likes Of You will continue on its merry crusade of pioneering quality music for people who love what they do and maybe create one of those memorable clubbing moments along the way.

JOSH WINK (Ovum Recordings. Philadelphia).

James Baldwin once wrote, “Be careful what you set your heart upon, for it will surely be yours. Embracing a diligent work ethic, a spiritual mindset & a self-taught mastery of dancefloor devastation using little more than a pair of turntables, Josh Wink has worked hard since 1990 to become one of the world’s most in demand purveyors of experimental, electronic, danceable music.

In 1990, Josh met up with a kindred spirit, fellow Philly jock, King Britt whose interests also include rap and acid jazz. Pooling their interests and blending their differences, the duo waxed E-culture’s “Tribal Confusion” for respected New York based indie label, Strictly Rhythm. They formed Ovum Recordings as an independent label in October 1994 and Josh recorded the cult classic “Liquid Summer”.

In 1995 Josh produced 3 huge tracks, which unquestionably took dance music to a dizzying plateau. ‘Don’t Laugh’ and ‘Higher State of Consciousness’ - tracks that topped charts worldwide and that are still recognized and played today..

Invitations to spin at prestigious nightspots all over the world have been pouring in since, but as his career has progressed, he has stayed true to his roots, never selling out and always maintaining his integrity, always coming home to his beloved Philadelphia.

Into 2008 and Wink has once again switched styles, altered rules and initiated a change. With his influential EP ‘Stay Out All Night’, released on Ovum in May. Wink spent the first half of 2008 preparing his fourth artist album - to be called ‘When a Banana Was Just a Banana’ which is set for release at the end of February 2009.

Be there to witness Josh Wink’s first Melbourne club show in five years..

THEO PARRISH (Sound Signature. Detroit) 3hrs

“Love of the music should be the driving force of any producer, performer or DJ.” Welcome to the merry world of Theo Parrish’s music. A mind of (and in a league) of his own, the Chicago-raised, Detroit resident is the legitimate heir and conscience of a DJ school that stems from ancestors like Ron Hardy, Frankie Knuckles or Andre Hatchett.

As anyone who has experienced a Theo Parrish set can testify, the work of this consummate architect of sound envelopes the listener, and transmits new perspectives on club sonics. Maltreating the eqs, playing vinyl like a self-contained vamped instrument, fusing Soul, Jazz, House and Disco into one capacious ardent ball is all part of Theo’s musical expression. He can fuse the rhythmic, Disco-based pulse of Chicago house with the modernist motorik soul of Detroit techno, while at the same time pointing to a lineage in black music that runs directly from Sun Ra to Sound Signature. “Jazz spawned House Music, Jazz spawned Hip Hop, Jazz spawned Funk and they all reflect back into that,” he says. This applies as well to the songs and tracks from Parrish’s own pockets. His label Sound Signature provides an adventure playground for vital drum machines, touch-and-go arrangements, regal synths and some of Detroit’s finest soul music talents. So if you want to see the future via the raw, soulful roots of House Music, then you are headed in the right direction.

DANNY HOWELLS (Renassiance. London).

From his early years of DJing at Bedrock nights in his home town of Hastings, to the 10+ hour sets in New York today, one thing remains the same - a complete love of all music. It’s this passion and plenty of hard work that has helped Danny to get where he is today. It’s no coincidence that he’s been placed in DJ Magazine’s top 20 DJs in the world for the last 3 years. Danny has a unique, eclectic sound which as been described as “deepsexyfuturistictechfunkhouse” and it’s this sound which is shaking floors worldwide.

It’s not just in the club where Danny has made a name for himself, he’s also been busy in the studio. Albums for Global Underground, Renaissance and his own Nocturnal Frequencies series have been the highlights in a continually growing back catalogue of acclaimed mixes. As a producer his main focus is with co-producer Dick Trevor and vocalist Erire as “Science Dept.”. Last year they released the highly successful single “Breathe” and fans can expect more to follow in 2002.

Danny’s infectious personality and individual style is what really puts him a cut above the rest though. You can really sense his connection with the crowd wherever he plays, and he has fully earned the label “the clubbers DJ”

CLAUDE VONSTROKE (Dirty Bird / Mothership. San Fransico). 3hrs.

Since he burst onto the scene in 2005 with the oddball classic ‘Deep Throat’ Barclay Crenshaw, aka Claude VonStroke has risen rapidly to very top of the DJ/Producer spectrum. Early productions, ‘Chimps ‘, ‘The Whistler’ and of course the mighty ‘Who’s Afraid Of Detroit’, were a true breath of fresh air amongst the stifling onslaught of minimal. Its not too big a statement, to say that it was these releases, with their inspired construction, crazy samples, and heavy basslines that really brought ‘fun’ back to the world’s dancefloors at a time when its was deemed ‘cool’ to be moody.

2009 has seen Claude Vonstroke mix the acclaimed Fabric 49 and release second artist album Bird Brain. Bird Brain is a complete guide to the musical mind of Claude VonStroke, a diverse menagerie of sounds and samples. The album is chock full of dirty, slutty, dank, funny and giggling cuts. Less axe murdering breakdowns, but with all the quirky madness still intact. Lets call it ‘VonStroke 2.0′.

A VonStroke DJ set is based on meticulous track selection and outrageous risk taking. Always taking time to find the special ass-wiggling cuts that keep the dance-floor percolating. With 3 hours to play with at The Likes Of You debut performance, god knows what the bird man will do!

Christian Burkhardt Live. (Oslo)

Christian Burkhardt, born in Heidelberg, Germany, attracted initial attention in 2007, when his publications with Oslo Records and Raum…musik found their way into the record cases of international DJs. Though Christian had always been an insider of the club scene, he reached this stage of his career in a roundabout way.

Burkhardt`s sounds cannot simply be reduced to a few catchwords. In spite of his clear groove patterns he manages to achieve a very subtle and complex rhythmic creation. However if you are waiting for ‘hit’ sounds, you will be disappointed. His live set is constantly evolving and consists of songs that are exclusively created for the respective medium. Even the titles that have already been published are not rendered in their original form, but rather integrated into the arrangement that consists of up to twenty songs.

Mike Callander, Gavin Keitel, Dave Pham, Dean Benson, Pat Tassone, Virginia Le, Rollin Connection, Myles Mac, Andy Hart, Tom Evans, Nick Jones, Dwayne Thompson, Safari, John Doe, Cameron Woodard, Mitch Kruz, Isaac Fryar, Matt Kovic, D-Manuel, Mike Buhl & Phillipee Fricot
