MARC ROMBOY [Systematic Records, Bremen]. 3hrs+

A true pioneer and dance music heavy weight, Marc Romboy has had a influential role in underground music for over a decade through his work at Systematic, Alphabet City, Terminal M and many more labels.

Electronic music with a certain break dance appeal - reminiscent of old school Chicago dance floor insanity - is Marc Romboy’s true passion. Romboy has co-founded and built internationally respected dance-music labels and projects, never tiring of coming up with fresh and innovative ideas to push the limits of electronic sounds.

Through both his solo releases and his collaborations, Romboy has also released on labels including Ovum, Simple, Brique Rouge, Superstition, 20:20 Vision and more. A regular collaboration is that with Romboy and Stephan Bodzin, the two have released records together on Systematic, 20:20 Vision and Bodzin’s own imprint Herzblut, with ‘Atlas’ and ‘Callisto’, being two of their biggest.

Romboy tore up The Likes Of You on Friday night and we are looking forward to more Remote Control Djing and Efx this Thursday.

RACKET, Thursday 2nd of September, Miss Libertine, 34 Franklin Street, Melbourne.

TOECUTTER

Over the past decade, Toecutter has fraternized with the hardcore scene – his first release was a battering of ‘Music Sounds Better with Me’ released in 2002 by the Death$ucker Label in the UK – even as he’s indulged himself in the French house/electro sound, paying homage to the likes of Oizo and Sebastian. His 2006 double LP We Topia was received with praise and confusion – represented by the likes of Soulwax (on Belgian National Radio no less) and the Bang Gang.
He toured Europe with LA’s Captain Ahab in 2008 and is high on a legend in the Sydney warehouse scene. His sets are an upfront concoction of house, electro, booty and breakcore. AWESOME!

BANKAI

One of the fastest rising glitch/nerdcore electro producers on the scene, Bankai appeared late April ‘09 and is already booking tours across Canada and the US.
Hailed as one of the foremost ‘open source’ producers, Bankai releases all the raw components of his music for free, online.

Bankai released his first EP Quarter Circle Punch in April ‘09, Teen Slut Pimp Strut in September, supported by a slew of remixes for people like Hot Bitch Arsenal, The Abominable Iron Sloth and Caustic. Bankai has achieved a cult following via private torrent trackers, music blogs and sites like thesixtyone.
http://kandm.bandcamp.com/

Automating;

Automating is Sasha from Melbourne, Australia. Sifting through the sonic waste and discarded technology left by the roadside of a world speeding too fast into the future. Field recordings, found sound, tape manipulation, noise and effects units. Currently pursuing live and studio created binaural soundscapes and archaic tape based drones.
http://automating.bandcamp.com/

Marcia Jane;

Marcia Jane is a video artist who endeavors to make connections between time, place and experience. Working with video projections and using rhythmic emissions of light, she investigates surface, space and frequency. Marcia is interested in the similarities and differences in ways we perceive sound and vision and often works in conjunction with sound artists to explore this. Marcia graduated from RMIT with Honours in Fine Art (Media Arts) in 2008 and has performed live at The NOW Now Festival (Blue Mountains, NSW), Institute of Modern Art (Brisbane, QLD) and exhibited installations at VCA Gallery and West Space in Melbourne. Her single–channel video works have screened at Australian Centre for the Moving Image, Melbourne International Film Festival and Tokyo Metropolitan Museum of Photography. Marcia Jane currently lives and works in Melbourne, Australia.
http://www.permutations.net/

Vj Netzair;

Building on his Bachelor of Arts Degree in Multimedia, Netzair has spent years experimenting, shooting and producing his own unique content. Crosscutting live, graphic compositions to sync, his style allows you to see beyond a reel of pleasant images - you see the music. Striving to make the night’s audio entertainment tangible, bringing sound to life, the visual experience is especially suited to an electronic environment where bass, glitch and snare can be translated optically. With a passion for live performance, it’s not uncommon to see Netzair pushing out vision for ten or more hours straight, on festival stages alongside International and local Dj’s, as well as club nights and community based video art events.
http://www.netzair.com/

A13;

Easily one of Melbourne’s most exciting DJ/producers to emerge on the Australian scene. With almost 10 years of DJ experience under his belt, playing in live groups (The Red-Eyes and now Affiks & A13) and smashing the clubs on the regular; A13 has been responsible for introducing Melbourne to the dubstep, future beats and glitch-hop sounds that have spawned from underground studios all over the globe. Acknowledging his affinity almost instantly, he has since started creating his own tracks and playing DJ sets at the popular monthly club nights Heavy Innit!!, Wobble, Too Much and other future music events. Recently supporting some of his favourite artists and key players such as 16Bit (UK), Joker (UK), The Bug (UK), Harmonic313 (UK), Starkey (USA), Truth (NZ), Dexterous (The Others-UK), Joe Nice (USA), Emalkay (UK), 6 Blocc (USA), Curse of the Machines (AUS), Goth Trad (JAP), Nero(UK), 2562(NTL), GrillaStep(AUS), Mista Savona(AUS), Dub Syndicate (JAMAICA) and Mad Professor (UK). With bookings coming at him left, right and centre, it seems that the late nights aren’t going to end anytime soon.
http://www.myspace.com/djaonethree

Xian;

Hailing from the wastelands of Bacchus Marsh, Xian’s unique grafting of juxtaposing genres is his claim to infamy, from grindcore to crack house, dubstep to greasy R&B and anything it takes to get your booty shakin. Solid kick drums and crisp snares puncture the orchestral ambience in a shit storm of hard hitting electro-step and dirty drum & bass. Muddled with just the right amount of sleaze and shrapnel from a dirty dirty pop culture. Supporting the likes of Clark (UK) U-zique (UK) Evol Intent (USA) Exile (UK) Enduser (USA) Goth Trad (JAP) Richard Divine (USA) to name a few. With local releases on System Corrupt and Black Lotus, internationally on Omeko (JAP) Wrong Music (UK) Acidsmover (RU) and BRK (FR) to airplay from TripleJ, Shibuya FM (JAP) and PBSFM, you will regret not bringing two pairs of dancing shoes.

http://www.myspace.com/shubniggurath

MisconceptIan;

The DJ MisconceptIan began Dj’ing in 2002 and was a regular at experimental music night Uncomfort at Pony for around 4 years. Soon afterwards he started a monthly night called Teratology which celebrated fringe and experimental electronic music such as breakcore, IDM, noise and other strange eccentricities. MisconceptIan always pushes the boundaries of what is safe and healthy to consume aurally, he returns to the stage after an extended hiatus to destroy conceptions and attitudes of what electronic music should be and how it should be mashed together.
The Likes Of You with Marc Romboy, Agoria, Chez Damier and Super Flu

Always looking forward and never back, step by step The Likes Of You has created something special and magical. A merging of young, innovative artists and established names bringing you the sound of Europe and beyond. Never- ending nights, never-ending so…unds and frequencies that touch every person and drive everyone crazy. We love music, we like to party, we love to party with The Likes Of You.

Romboy is one of The Likes Of You favorites and never fails to get the crowd into an uncontrollable frenzy, be prepared.

AGORIA [In Fine, Lyon] 3hrs+

The man otherwise known as Sebastien Devaud wasn’t bitten by the dance music bug until he was out of his teens, but once he began hunting imported 12”s from the US and Germany in his native France, there was no turning back. His production career began in 1999, with his debut album Blossom and first compilation following in 2003 – and it was clear even in those early days that a serious new talent was emerging. Blending the throb and groove of deeper, stripped-back techno with a keen sense of musicality, emotion and atmosphere, his sound transcends beyond mere dancefloor disposability.

His 2nd attempt at his first ever visit to OZ will be blessed with more fortune (we hope), don’t miss it. Proudly supplied by Finely Tuned.

CHEZ DAMIER [Mojuba, Chicago]

A now legendary figure in electronic music, Chez Damier has played close witness to many of the pivotal moments in the development of house and techno. Jointly responsible with partner Ron Trent for Prescription Records – widely recognised as one of the greatest labels of all time – Chez Damier carries abound a piece of the soul of house music.

After taking an extended break from the music industry either side of the turn of the millennium, the house music impulse returned to Damier. A handful of releases in 2004 and the odd DJ date hinted that a return was on the cards.

In 2009, the last year of the decade Damier found a trusted outlet for his talents. A series of releases for the German label Mojuba signalled that he was on his way back to show the young pretenders the way. With momentum building behind him, Chez Damier will be exploring fresh artistic avenues in the new decade and looking to consolidate his legendary status as a DJ.

SUPER FLU [Monabery, Germany]

Feliks Thielemann & Mathias Schwarz - that´s Super Flu!!!
Welcome to a world where crispy baked bass drums give the keynote, where Momratzn twitch to tweaking hi-hats and speech bubbles wave engaging basses to you!Do you falter on making a tough decision? Super Flu recommend you garlic bread rolls and 6-minute-boiled eggs!Is your equipment rubbish? Trust your intuition, tickle the max out of the old stuff and squeeze inspiration out of everything you can lay your hands on!Are you lacking ideas? Take your cockatoo’s advice! Go on vacation and have some beer. Try, (you know, doing something you’d never do otherwise). Listen to Jazz. Tinker whatever comes to your mind using funny snack bar names, exotic instruments and kid’s toys.Now with your best mate and at least one mutual favourite bakery, lots of Herzblut and a great Traum behind, nothing can harm you anymore…!

Mike Callander, Dave Pham, Nick Jones, Tom Evans, Dean Benson, Pat Tassone, Virginia Le, Muska, Dwayne Thompson, Isaac Fryar, Matt Kovic, Monty McGaw, Daniel Tardrew, Oliver James, Joe Boyer, Nick Young, Aaron Trotman and Sam Gudge.

From 1999 to late 2003, Scott worked, assuming various roles, for the Montreal based company Applied Acoustics Systems, makers of a range of critically acclaimed software synthesizers. Having now moved on to pursue his own musical efforts full time, the experience has left him with a passion for the development of new creative interfaces, and a strong grasp of some the most cutting edge technology in the industry. A certified music technology junkie, his knowledge in such matters has been occasionally called upon at various events, most notably the 2007 edition of the Red Bull Music Academy in Melbourne, Australia.

Whether crafting kaleidoscopic house and techno, snap-clap digital dancehall, or impossibly heavy dub, Scott continues to search for his own unique voice between the ones and zeros.

Haul Music, Stable and Roxanne Palour invite you to come say hello to some of our friends. We’re glad you met Gui Boratto the first time round, now meet:

Hello my name is Martin Landsky (Poker Flat/Mobliee Germany)

Unlike any other German protagonist of the electronic dance scene, Martin Landsky withdrew himself from the well known category of electronic dance music. The verbal approach is of course only a portion of the complete and original sound of Landsky‘s music which combines Techno, House, Minimal and Funk. He has been creating waves as a sensational DJ and producer since the middle of the nineties and Landsky has also been heard and recognized, since the year 2000, as one of the key figures in the circle of producers at Poker Flat Recordings.

Hello my name is Alex Kid (Rekids/Cadenza/NRK/F comm./France)

From roots in early nineties Parisian rave culture, this multi instrumentalist, composer, remix artist, DJ and sound engineer has set on a formidable trajectory since Laurent Garnier invited him to put out his debut single, ‘Playground’, in 1997. Alongside definitive producers like St.Germain and Mr.Oizo, Alexkid spent many years as a flagship artist for Garnier’s F Communications label, playing a pivotal role in sculpting the profile of French electronic music both at home and abroad while developing his own inimitable identity. An electronic missionary, Alexkid has taken his epic live arrangements and inventive DJ sets to the four corners of the map and everywhere in between, transferring his early infatuation with the live spectacle into moist celebrations of the moment. Connection is key, and Alexkid’s intuitive interpretations of other artist’s music extends far beyond the DJ booth. After ending five years of residency in Berlin’s Weekend club, he has finally moved to the German capital where he’s now set his base at Water-gate club. In demand as a remix artist, he has lent remixes to everyone from Damian Lazarus to George Michael, a collaboration with Berlin minimal troupe M.A.N.D.Y. Alexkid tamed his ecstatic compositions into works of profound balance and precision.

Supports:

Christian Vance, Dave Pham, Safari, Craig McWhinney, JPS, Nam, Unfettered, Andy Hart & Myles Mac.

STEPHAN BODZIN (Herzblut Records, Bremen)

Authenticity is everything - without it everything would appear to be nothing more than a hollow shell”, says someone who has found himself at the centre of the international techno scene since 2006. The passionate musician from Bremen has become a heavy influence for an awful lot of producers worldwide.

As the son of an experimental musician his career in the music industry was set from an early age. And it was only a matter of time before Stephan would fall in love with electronic music. Composing music for several prestigious European theaters was the first successful platform for his music. His mind-blowing talent was soon discovered and producers such as Oliver Huntemann, Thomas Schumacher and Marc Romboy queued up to work with Stephan.

Due to the quality of his impressive music he has reached the top of the international techno scene. Most recently he has remixed songs for well-known bands such as Depeche Mode, Booka Shade and The Knife

His solos productions have done nothing but raise his worldwide profile even more and he now has the freedom of an individual artist with a worldwide audience.

Stephan’s music is as polarizing as he is, both as DJ and live artist. But there’s one statement that holds true for all of his productions: they are certainly of the highest ‘authenticity

triple J & Inthemix presents

The Likes Of You with Stephan Bodzin Live, Robert Hood and Hugo.

Intuition is the little man inside all our heads. A flash of illumination that can’t be judged by logical reason. Intuition gives us direction and guidance in every aspect of life, from who we like…and who you don’t, where we eat and drink, what we wear and what music we like. Some people are in tune with and close to their little man, some people don’t hear him at all. For those of you who don’t listen, your intuition is telling to you to its time for techno…Its time for The Likes Of You.

STEPHAN BODZIN Re:Live (Herzblut Records, Bremen)

Authenticity is everything - without it everything would appear to be nothing more than a hollow shell”, says someone who has found himself at the centre of the international techno scene since 2006. The passionate musician from Bremen has become a heavy influence for an awful lot of producers worldwide.

Stephan’s music is as polarizing as he is, both as DJ and live artist. But there’s one statement that holds true for all of his productions: they are certainly of the highest ‘authenticity

Stephan Bodzin Re-Live will be performed as a worldwide debut in Melbourne on the 2nd of July.

ROBERT HOOD (Omega Album Tour. M-Plant )

Robert Hood needs little introduction. Founding member of the legendary group Underground Resistance as a ‘Minister Of Information’ with ‘Mad’ Mike Banks & Jeff Mills, his seminal works on Jeff Mill’s Axis and his very own M-Plant imprint paved the way for a wave of stripped-down dance floor minimalism that directed much of techno’s path throughout the late Nineties.

Robert Hood makes minimal Detroit techno with an emphasis on soul and experimentation over flash and popularity. Having recorded for Metroplex, Jeff Mills’ Axis label, as well as Patrick Pulsingers ‘Cheap’ label, Peacefrog, and more recently Music Man, Hood also owns and operates the M-Plant imprint, through which he’s released the bulk of his solo material. He has only released 2 ever CD mixes one for French label Logistic, and a mix for the club ‘Fabric’ mix series

HUGO (Italy)

Hailing from Turin in Italy, Hugo was really young when he had the perception that music is something more than an expression of art. During the 90’s classically trained jazz musician Hugo, felt in love with electronic music.

Music is not merely the sound, or the perception of sound, but a means by which perception, action and memory are organized. In Hugo’s live set the beat became more mechanical and the bass grooves became deeper, while elements of electronic funk, latin percussion’s and melodies are grafted over 4/4 beat.

Hugo has been releasing his productions, constantly improving his ability to amalgamate distinct sounds into a cohesive whole. Hugo blends together the artificial and the organic, and uses tension and pacing for a powerful effect on the dance floor. Hugo’s music is not a break with the electronic music of the past, but an extreme re-invention of the music of today.

Dave Pham, Mike Callander, Gavin Keitel, Dean Benson, Pat Tassone, Andy Hart, Myles Mac, Virginia Le, Nick Jones, Tom Evans, Muska, Dwayne Thompson, Isaac Fryar, Matt Kovic, Mike Buhl, Safari, Monty McGraw, Daniel Tardrew, Oliver James, Cameron Woodard, Mitch Kruz, Sam McEwin, Craig McWhinney, John Doe, PK, Van G, Nick Young, Aaron Trotman & Louis McCoy.

Friday 2nd July 2010 at Brown Alley. Corner of King & Lonsdale
